Kabawa: Momofuku's Caribbean Adventure in the East Village
I’ll be honest—when I heard David Chang was opening yet another restaurant (reply to my messages Haera 😉), I wasn’t really think that was big news. But then I saw what Kabawa was up to, and now I’m intrigued. A Caribbean fine-dining concept with an actual Barbadian chef leading the way? Very cool. Chef Paul Carmichael has split the space into two sections: an upscale dining room with prix-fixe menus featuring rasta pasta and jerk duck, and Bar Kabawa, where daiquiris flow and patties get fancy. Notable Openings in Q1 2025:
The culinary landscape of 2025 is starting to shape up. Here’s some New York Spots we’re excited for:
Bong (Brooklyn, NY): Chef Chakriya Un's Cambodian pop-up, Kreung Cambodia, is transitioning to a permanent space named Bong in Crown Heights. The menu will feature Cambodian staples like kuy teav (rice noodle soup) and num pang paté (a Cambodian take on banh mi) these guys have been working on bringing this to life for some time. Congrats guys! (More info)
Maison Passerelle (New York, NY): Chef Gregory Gourdet is set to debut Maison Passerelle in the Financial District. The restaurant will focus on French classics through the lens of the country's colonial history, offering dishes like duck confit with West African-inspired spinach stew. (More info)
Chez Fifi (Upper East Side): A French bistro housed in a townhouse, featuring an impressive art collection and a diverse menu. The interiors are crafted by Stockholm-based studio Joyn, sounds like a fancy spot to take your parents when they come visit. We’re into it. (More info)
New Bars and Lounges to Hit up this Winter:
Never a dull moment in NYC. Here’s some places we’ll be visiting this week:
People’s (Greenwich Village): Once an art gallery, now transformed into a club with multiple themed rooms for drinks and dancing, designed by Workstead. Each room offers a distinct vibe, so you’ll never get bored. (More info)
Zimmi’s (West Village): A Southern French restaurant serving homey dishes in a cozy, simple setting. (More info)
Events You Should REALLY Show Up To
La Cantine Winter Clothing Drive
La Cantine’s annual winter clothing drive is back, and no, this isn’t an excuse to offload your questionable wardrobe choices from 2012. Drop off clean, gently used clothing at the cafe all winter long—think of it as karma banking. And because good deeds deserve caffeine, they’re giving away free drip coffee with each drop-off.
NY to LA Fundraiser Fair
If your Sunday plans don’t include throwing money at a good cause while sipping mezcal, then what the hell ma. The NY to LA Fundraiser Fair is taking over Common Mollies in East Williamsburg from 12-5p this Sunday, featuring drink specials courtesy of Madre Mezcal (100% of proceeds go to charity, so double-fisting is encouraged). You’ll also find a curated lineup of brands like Lisa Says Gah and Samantha Pleet selling clothing, books, and artwork. Shopping for a cause? That’s the kind of capitalism I can get behind.
What I’m Listening To
KAYTRANADA & Aminé — "4EVA." A smooth blend of beats and lyrics that's perfect for unwinding with a Supergay cocktail.
Romy — "Enjoy Your Life." It’s upbeat and refreshing, just like a (you guessed it) a Two Fruits Ginger Mule.
Tastings
We’ll be pouring SUPERGAY Spirits at the incredible Alkali Rye in Oakland, CA this Friday night. It will be a super fun afternoon with plenty of other spirits vendors in attendance. Pouring from 4-7pm.
Cocktail of the Week: Colder than a Witches Tit
Embrace the cold with a cocktail that's both cozy and boozy:
1 oz Olive Oil-infused Supergay Vodka
1 oz pear brandy
¾ oz spiced honey syrup (infused with cinnamon and star anise)
½ oz fresh lemon juice
2 dashes of Angostura bitters
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a thin slice of pear and a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg. Warm, but also complex, it’s the perfect winter drink.
